Managing Director and Global Head of Environmental Finance,
Michael Eckhart, Managing Director and Global Head of Environmental Finance at Citigroup, based in New York City, serves clients in renewable and clean energy with investment banking services, project financing, and equity and debt capital raises. He led Citi’s work in establishing the Green Bond Principles and has served on its Executive Committee. He is on the Steering Committee of REN 21, a member of the IEA’s Renewable Industry Advisory Board, an Observer to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and a financial advisor to the UN’s SE4All. Previously, he was founder and President of the American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE) in Washington, DC, where he emerged as a global leader in the renewable energy field, also based on earlier work as the SolarBank Initiative in Europe, China, India and South Africa.
Previously, he had a 20-year career in power generation with United Power Systems, Aretê Ventures, General Electric and Booz, Allen & Hamilton, where he conducted many of the original studies on the new energy technologies in the 1970s for DOE, the White House and the US Senate. He has received numerous awards including Renewable Energy Man of the Year of India in 1998, the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship in 2008, and the International Solar Energy Society’s Global Policy Leadership Award in 2013. He is an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University’s School for International and Policy Affairs, teaching Environmental Finance. He served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service and holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
