Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses

Joseph Oates is the President and CEO of Con Edison Transmission, a new Con Edison subsidiary that invests in electric transmission and natural gas pipelines and storage projects. In addition, he serves as the Chairman of the Board for Con Edison’s Clean Energy Businesses, which is the 5th largest solar photovoltaic electricity producer in the country.  


Prior to his current roles, Mr. Oates held executive positions as Senior Vice President, Corporate Shared Services which includes the information technology and human resources functions for Con Edison’s two utility companies, and in energy supply, treasury, electric operations and energy policy.  He also served in various system planning, finance and operational positions of increasing responsibility at Con Edison after joining the company in 1987.  Prior to joining Con Edison, Mr. Oates worked at Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation in engineering and operations roles.

He served as Chairman of the New York Independent System Operator Management Committee from July 2003 to November 2004.  Mr. Oates currently serves on the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee for Arts Westchester, the designated arts council for Westchester County, New York.    

Mr. Oates holds a Masters in Business Administration with a finance concentration from Fordham University and Bachelor and Masters degrees in mechanical engineering from Manhattan College.
